When was the last time you said to yourself “I need a massage”
Most of us would have had this cross our mind in the last several months, either from working long days at the home office desk, home schooling the kids or from exercising.
Massage is one of the oldest healing traditions. Massage involves rubbing, pressing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. It can be used for many reasons, but it is generally used to help improve someone’s health and wellbeing.
There are many types of massage techniques.
- Myotherapy: Treatment of soft tissue pain, injury and dysfunction affecting general movement. Aim is to restore and maintain the health and function of soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia). Many techniques are involved in the treatment which include cupping, dry needling and deep tissue massage.
- Remedial: Primarily uses different massage techniques to reduce and eliminate muscular tension and aid in relaxation.
- Therapeutic: Also known as “Swedish massage”. This type of technique aims to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation.
- Lymphatic drainage: A gentle massage that helps relax the nervous system and aide the immune system by helping remove waste and toxins from body tissue. A variety of health conditions can cause a build up of lymphatic fluid
How can massage help me?
There are many benefits to massage, and they include:
- Psychological
- Physical
- Physiological
- Performance
As practitioners, we love having a massage for the impact it has on our overall mental health. Massage helps to reduce the production of stress hormones and increases your blood flow, which consequently reduces your blood pressure and heart rate.
If you are regularly active, massage also increases oxygen to the muscles and removes waste products in the blood stream. This is a great adjunct tool to improve your performance and help your recovery, especially if you feel fatigued and heavy in your limbs.
At Peak Performance Physiotherapy, our massage therapist is experienced in all forms of massage therapy. We offer 30min and 60min sessions, so call us if you want to feel fresh and relaxed!
